Internship Rainbow Soulclub
Rainbow Soulclub, an initiative of Saskia Janssen and George Korsmit involves weekly meetings and collaborative projects between artists, art students and clients of Stichting De Regenboog which provides shelter and care for homeless people and for users of hard drugs in Amsterdam.
During my internship at the Rainbow Soulclub I have learned a lot by making new friends, drawing from observation and working towards an exposition. I visited a shelter every monday to talk to people and illustrate them and their surroundings. At the main studio we worked together on multiple artworks leading up to the exposition ‘Rearrangements of Priorities - 20 years of Rainbow Soulclub’ which would be open for two months at W139 in Amsterdam.
The exposition was mostly archival meaning we repaired previous artworks made by the group as well as working out ideas that had been originated in the past. One of these ideas were the coconut lamps made by past member Totty. In remembrance of his life we made over a hundred coconut lamps from scratch, each one unique and made in collaboration.
Further projects included repairing and upgrading the tapestries inspired by Perry’s dance rythms, a memorial kite for passed away members and a dreadlock altar.
Working towards and setting up a full size exposition together with Rainbow Soulclub and W139 taught me a lot of skills and ended up being very rewarding. This internship has left me a lot of useful connections and overall inspired me to work more in collaboration.

Violence in children toys is the theme for this newspaper/zine. A satirical work on the hidden intentions of war toys, and their effect on children. From what age does indoctrination begin?

A zine consisting of eight handdrawn illustrations. The principle of ‘beeldrijm’, meaning image rhyme, connects the drawings throughout the zine.

Staren doen we elke dag. Aan het ontbijt, in de trein, op het werk. Rust voor de ogen is zeldzaam in de clusterfuck van visuele informatie in onze huidige leefomgeving. Dat kunnen je ogen helemaal niet aan. Dus moeten ze even onscherp worden gesteld. Een zelfverdedigingsmechanisme voor de moderne mens. Staren is dus een manier van escapisme, dagdromen, maar het kan ook tegen ons worden gebruikt. Staren is aandacht, misschien niet in directe zin, omdat het tevens het verlies van aandacht aankondigt, maar wel in onderbewuste zin.
Reclames zijn gemaakt om zo snel mogelijk de aandacht te grijpen, en niet meer los te laten. Reclame hangt tegenwoordig overal, maar zou dus het best moeten werken op plekken waar mensen gewoontelijk naar staren. Of op een plek waar het een sociale plicht is om te staren: de WC. Men hoort niet om zich heen te turen bij de buren tijdens het urineren. U staart stoïcijns voor u uit, of naar beneden naar uw eígen geslachtsdeel, en vooral waar die op mikt. Soms is er de hulp van een geschilderde vlieg, die functioneert als een verkeersbord dat de plas richting aanwijst. Dit nonprofit project wordt tegenwoordig vervangen door een dystopische uitvinding: een reclame scherm boven het urinoir.
De enige plaats waar het nog sociaal geaccepteerd is om voor je uit te staren is dus niet lang meer veilig van kapitalistische stimulatie.

My first full sized complete comic book is named ‘CELL’. An 18 page long adventure following a bug in the system of a vast technologoical landscape. The struggle of biological life in the confined mass of industrialised society, a theme present in many of my works but first conceived in this comic book. CELL is an easy but encompassing read, with lots of humor and a surprising twist.
All panels hannddrawn, edited, printed and bound by me.

‘Zit’ (Imperative of sit in Dutch) is a series of works made based on some inspiring patterns of bus seats, carpets and an antique chair. The sampling of this visual repitition lead me to create a comic-like sequence. A depiction of the mechanical pattern of our mundane lives, and how to break out of it.
The work is a combination of drawings collaged photo’s and digital editing, printed on A3 format.
